My First Blog Post

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore – July 2018

I go to seek a great perhaps.

— John Green.

Welcome to my blog! For those of you who are new, my name is Melanie but I prefer to be called “Mel.”

If you are an adventurer, you have come to the right place. Feel free to navigate through my site at your own personal freedom!

I know people come here for my ‘travel diary’ entries and my amazing travel tips for budget travelers so I will make my introduction short and sweet.

At only 20 years old, I have traveled to parts of the world some may never see and places you think only exist in movies. I have a deep connection to the world around me and find nature to be my spiritual guide. I do not enjoy working out, but I will hike a mountain for 4 hours just to see water fall (Get it? Waterfall). I am the oldest of three, first of my name, dog mom of Milo, and watcher of stars.

If you are my professor and have more questions regarding myself, please refer to the “about me” page for more information. Thanks!

As for my blog viewers and readers- thank you for spending the time to visit my personal diary, it truly is something I have always wanted to share with people and hope you feel the same way that I do when I explore this beautiful world.

About My Site

The topic I chose for my site was a travel blog dedicated to the places I have been and the things I have learned along the way. My ‘Destinations’ header is not filled with every place I have been but I chose the four places that were my favorite. My ‘Travelers Journal’ is filled with the ways I travel and how I do it being a college student. I also have a ‘Travel Tips’ header where readers can enjoy me sharing my secrets to budget travelling. I chose travelling as the topic for my website because it is my favorite hobby. If I am not studying, I am probably thinking about the place I want to go too next.

The current theme in my blog is an original WordPress theme called “Lovecraft.” I specifically chose this theme because of the way the main header of the mountains stays on each page the reader goes to. I was aiming for aesthetic in my blog, and adding Lovecraft into it was the perfect simplicity I wanted for the location of my articles and widgets.

The reason I chose these specific colors and fonts into my website is because I did some research before doing so. I found that it is acceptable to use the aesthetic of two different fonts that work really well together into your blog. I specifically chose ‘Playfair Display’ for all my headers/titles and ‘Open Sans’ for all my base font. I chose the background color of white because it made my blog feel “cleaner” with the black font as the pair go well together.

Since working on WordPress since February, I have learned quite a lot on how to make my own website if I ever needed to one day. The basics version of WordPress is enough to make your website feel real. Once you make your website public, everyone you share the link with or comes across it, can see your whole website. Learning the basics of WordPress is a huge advantage working in the business field. If I ever want to become my own entrepreneur, I already know how to make a website instead of paying someone to make one for me. In my own opinion, I think the best part of WordPress when it comes to customizing your website is being able to add widgets into the sidebars. Because I am a travel blog, I chose to add Instagram as one of widgets to show my readers even more pictures of the places I have been- they say a picture can tell a thousand words.

Colorado Itinerary

My boyfriend and I booked a flight to Colorado with no plans 24 days before lift off. This trip was for our college spring break and our trip was just days before the Coronavirus pandemic hit the United States.Wanna know what we did? Below is our spontaneous itinerary for our 5 day trip to the high altitude state of Colorado.

Day 1: Denver

We landed into Denver International Airport at 8 p.m. Instead of waiting 45 minutes for an Uber/Lyft, we found a rather expensive taxi at the airport (If you’re on a budget, wait for the lyft.) We had booked a rental car from ‘Turo‘ which is an app where real people rent their cars to travelers. You can find an average car much cheaper than the airport Enterprise on the app. From our rental car, we drove to our Airbnb in Denver and walked around downtown until it got too cold for us.

Day 2: Rocky Mountains

From Denver we eat a quick breakfast and start driving to Rocky Mountains National Park (about a 3 hour drive.) There is a park entrance fee and it is well worth the price. We decided to explore by driving around the whole park considering we were not prepared with traction on our boots from all the snow and ice. Although, we did hike a short trail head called ‘Bear Lake.” In the month of February, there was light traffic and we almost had it all to ourselves. After leaving the Rocky Mountains, we start our 5 hour drive to our next Airbnb home located directly in the mountains. We get there around 9 p.m and go to sleep after a long day.

Day 3: Red Cliff, Colorado

We drove to our next Airbnb last night. We are secluded high in the mountains over 8,000 feet. Our Tiny Home on A Mountain is beautiful. We wake up early and eat breakfast. When people think of Colorado, they think of skiing and snowboarding. How about the snowmobilers? We spend the rest of the day snowmobiling. If you are ever near the Vail/Red Cliff area in Colorado, I highly recommend Colorado Backcountry Rentals for all your snowmobile needs.

Day 4: Drive to Colorado Springs

The next day we wake up before the sun rises over the mountains, pack up all our belongings, and start our 3 hour drive to Colorado Springs from Red Cliff. We pass many fourteeners along the way, which are mountains that are over 14,000 feet! We arrive to Colorado Springs around 2 p.m for a day of exploring. I highly recommend visiting Garden Of The Gods if you ever decide to stay in the Spring’s. We stay in a cute bungalow home from Airbnb for the rest of the night.

Day 5: Flying Home

We wake up early. Our flight is at 7 pm. The drive from Colorado Springs to Denver is short so we visit Garden Of The Gods one more time before we leave. We see the huge Red Rocks Amphitheatre as we are driving on the freeway. The airport is filled with people in masks. COVID-19 is in the States and we are flying home to Michigan.

I do not expect people to take this into their own travel plans, but they worked well for us. In 5 days, we visited so many parts of Colorado. We stayed in 3 airbnbs and never got altitude sickness. Colorado is now my favorite travel destination.

Qlik Sense Site – NHL

  • NHL – National Hockey League
  • Sports
  • Audience for data includes, statistical crew, team players, and coaches to improve team stats.
Figure 1 – “NHL teams can use this rich data to analyze and even predict the best locations on the ice for goals and blocks.” Vizlib Scatter Chart – NHL Hockey Shots

The Qlik Sense site application that I chose as my favorite was a data set on NHL hockey shots. As a person who is not a big sports lover but a person who appreciates statistical data, it really intrigued me that sports data is a thing! The data takes over 1.8 million shots that were taken from 9 seasons of the NHL Hockey league to analyze the best locations for goals and blocks. As you can see in Figure 1 from above, the scatter chart is laid out on a hockey rink to make the data that much more accurate.

My favorite things about this application is the deep data that has went into creating accurate statistics. This hockey analyzer includes goals from past games, the location that shots were blocked, number of shots taken and from where, and even the amount of missed shots on the rink. The most intriguing part about these collections is that includes data from over 11,000 games that partook over the years. After discovering an application that exists for sports data I have concluded that Qlik Sense can work for any industry and any statistics that need to be gathered and analyzed. Having the access to this sorts of data can increase the advantage of the quality of team stats and play just as it would for any other company.

Notable Word Press Sites

Jay-Z’s website

Jay-Z’s website is curated by himself which covers the topics of: music, fashion, art, and culture. The reason I chose his website was because I have never seen an aesthetic like his. When you first enter the site, you are bombarded with small squares that are actually articles. I really enjoyed the originality and creativity that went into his site. My friends, who also enjoy art content would be pleased with Jay-Z’s site. Compared to other artists’ sites, his site is one of a kind and would recommend it to friends and family if they enjoyed it.

After going through and exploring lifeandtimes.com, I do have some recommendations for Jay-Z as a sincere user. For improvement and easier navigation, I think the header should be at the top of the page. Not all users are looking for all topics and would just like to read about a specific article. It is not until you get to the bottom of the main page that you can navigate freely through out the site. I recommend to Jay-Z to put his header at the top of the page and his site would be way easier to use!

Generations Against Bullying Association website

On WordPress showcase, I found this organization that has their own website against this generations bullying. I specifically chose this site because it stands for something good and making the world a better place. As a person who has been bullied as a kid, respect the community that works together to make this site what it is. The site is easily navigated and something that people could use especially if they have younger children in the online communities. It is family and child friendly and with the amount of information on their site, you are informed about a lot.

My recommendation goes to the sites creators to make the goal of their organization more easier-to-understand. Although, persons who enter the site know that it is for kids being bullied online, people are looking for their goals and what they are actually doing in the real world to make it a safer place. When you read their mission statement on their page, it is to inspire children and adults to create a safer environment. How about for the people who are going through the bullying right now? I would recommend this page to my friends as family as long as they take the stand to fight bullying that is happening now.

What It Means to Lead

Simon Sinek – What It Means To Lead

The embedded Youtube video above is Simon Sinek’s five lessons on what it means to be a good leader. I believe anyone can be a GOOD leader, and just like in the speech, your intelligence does not determine how good of a leader you are. Anyone can take the lessons and stories from Sinek’s speech and find opportunity within their own lives with it. From the points in the video, I found to be driven by three important qualities.

  1. Know when and how to seize opportunities
  2. Always tell the truth
  3. Ask for and except help

Every person has a reason or belief when they take the opportunity to seize something they want. In the video Sinek says there are two types of people: people who see what they want and people who see the thing that is preventing them from getting the thing they want. I personally believe there is no problem if you see the glass half-empty- but do not let that block in the road prevent you from getting what you want. “Stay fixated on the thing you want, go after the thing you want, use any means necessary, but do not every deny anybody else from getting the thing that they want” Simon Sinek says in the video. The lesson I took from this to be a good leader is, do not let anyone stop you from getting what you want, do it in your own way, without inconveniencing someone else.

It is not hard being honest, but it is hard to tell the truth. The most important quality any great leader should have is always telling the truth. How else would you expect people to follow you and your word? To be this person, you must not always have your best interest in mind, but the people that you want to trust you. Trust does not just emerge, it begins with full communication, taking full responsibility whether you are put in a good or bad light, and then trust can be established by these similar values.

You do not have to be the most intelligent person to be the greatest leader. The biggest mistake people make is thinking they have to know all the answers and pretending they do when they don’t, Sinek says. What I appreciate from this lesson is that even if you hold the highest credibility in the room, it is OK to ask for help from others, even if they do not hold the same credibility as you. When you act like you know everything, people will think that you don’t need the help- but that is not true because there always ways we can makes things better just by adding another persons ideas. I hold this lesson, never be afraid to except and ask for help, as the most important quality any great leader can hold.

My Travel Strategy

1. What is my budget?

First step is asking myself how much I want to spend. After careful consideration of weather, mood, and timing, I narrow down the list of places I can reach under my current circumstances.

2. Am I flying or driving?

This is the question that can drastically change my plans. After many many long road trips, I have finally found that the maximum amount of time I can sit still in a car is for about 10 hours. If you enjoy driving and watching the scenery, consider boarding states for your starter trips. When you are choosing to fly, you have to consider flight tickets into your budget.

3. Where am I staying?

Airbnb. Airbnb. Airbnb. My go-to website for every place that I choose to stay. I will never stay at a hotel again! If you are on a budget, consider checking out your Airbnb options before looking at hotels. To the readers who do not like the idea of staying at another persons home, you can ask the host and most of time it is just their vacation home or a rental home for other travelers.

4. How Am I Paying?

Ah, yes. This was always the factor that stopped me from going on many trips. Do NOT let this stop you! You finally put in all your information, you are ready to check out, and you see the price. Do not be scared of a price unless you can not afford it. Think about a miles credit card if you prefer to fly. Choose the card that has the most money. If you are going with another person, only one can pay. Decide who wants to put the transaction on their card without becoming in debt which should be repaid from the next person as soon as possible. Choose wisely, but do not stop here.

5. PLAN & PACK

I finally booked it! I usually am booked 2 months ahead but I love spontaneous trips. With the way I travel, there is no telling how long I have to plan and pack. I usually have an idea of where I am going beforehand. Sometimes, I even do some researching on the way to my destination. I like to make an itinerary and have an idea of what I have planned to do, but my rule is, it does not have to be followed. Unless you are travelling somewhere deserted, toiletries and other things can be bought at your destination if you forgot something. *Travelers tip: PACK LIGHT!

5 CHEAP TRAVEL DESTINATIONS

*I am assuming readers are located in Michigan. For those who are not, I am sorry if these destinations are not cheap from your state.

1. Traverse City, Michigan

If you enjoy Up North, Michigan as much as I do, this is the perfect cheap travel destination from your home in Michigan. You can drive with a car good on gas or fly out from a small airport into Traverse City. Visit the Mackinac Bridge and enjoy the free scenery.

2. Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

I’m sorry if you do not have a passport. If you get one over the age of 16, they do not expire for 10 years. Niagara Falls from the Canada side is said to be better. Take this upon yourself and take the drive over the border to see these huge waterfalls for yourself.

3. Chicago, Illinois

Less than a 5 hour drive from eastern Michigan, Chicago can be cheap if you let it be. Use Airbnb for a place to stay, hotels are much more expensive in the downtown area. There is not much scenery along the drive but Chicago is filled with instagram worthy backgrounds.

4. Put-In-Bay, Ohio

An island village found in Ohio. Take the ferry to island and rent a golf cart or a bike and ride around the island at your own pace. There is plenty of attractions around the island, you can even take a helicopter ride if it is in your budget.

5. Toronto, Ontario, Canada

If you have never been to Toronto, do not go in the Winter unless you enjoy the cold. Visit the capital of Ontario during the summer months to get the most out of your trip. Find a cheap apartment on Airbnb and the rest is all up to you. Enjoy their poutine and the endless amounts of bars and restaurants. Visit the CN Tower at a general admission of $40.

Good Ole Smoky Mountains

In February, 2019 I took an awesome risk and drove 10 hours with my boyfriend to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. It was both of our first-times here and we rented a cabin secluded high in the mountains. Gatlinburg is known for its touristy attractions and colorful scenery. For our first trip there, we decided to stay secluded from people and only decided to interact when we needed food from the grocery store. For our trip, as you can see from the pictures above, we decided to hike a trail in the Smoky Mountains. We hiked an easy trail called ‘Grotto Falls’ which had the only waterfall you can walk behind in Smoky Mountains National Park.

5 months later and we were back in Gatlinburg. But this time… My boyfriend and I brought our friends. 8 of us stayed in a comfortable cabin from Airbnb, secluded high in the mountains with amazing views. As a group we hiked a trail called ‘Rainbow Falls.’ Nightlife is better in Gatlinburg with a group of friends. We enjoyed the views of the Gatlinburg Sky Lift at night.

*Assuming the reader is over 21 and legally allowed to consume alcohol, my friends and I highly recommend ‘Ole Smoky Moonshine’ as a souvenir for friends and family if you ever decide to visit Tennessee. A travelers tip: WonderWorks Pigeon Forge (upside down house) and Dollywood are worth visiting if you are looking for more attractions.

“Up-North” Michigan

For my non-Michiganders, “Up-North” is what we call Northern Michigan. And for the people who do know, everything after Great Lakes Crossing is Up North.

I have made way too many memories on the lakes and on the trails. I have taken so many pictures that I can not even collect them all into one place. I wanted to share some of my travels to “Up-North” because Michigan is the loveliest state of them all, and nobody can argue with me on that. The pictures above were taken in 2018, and it was the first trip I went on without my family. I have traveled Up North countless times with my family and friends but this was my first time I was in charge of my own plans and food. My sister, two close friends of mine, and I drove 4 hours to Traverse City, Michigan for an amazing 3 day experience. Road trips with your best friends and sister, visiting cool landmarks such as the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and just having a good time with no parents. We found an awesome cabin on the lake from Airbnb and the rest was ours to enjoy!

The pictures above were taken in August 2019. My boyfriend took me on a birthday trip to Interlochen, Michigan. This small town is just a 30-minute drive to Traverse City and was perfectly located next to biking and ATV trails. I say my boyfriend took me because he paid for the stay but, I chose the house. As always, I found the perfect Tiny House on Airbnb. We both enjoy biking, so we dedicated our 2-night stay to traveling by bike. We did some research and found the perfect nearby trails to ride. The reason I am adding such a small trip from all the places I have been is because sometimes even the small trips are filled with so many fond memories. We saw so much wildlife, we enjoyed the fresh air, and with no access to the internet all we had was what was around us to take-in. Michigan’s beauty is underrated and there’s so many places to see here.

Student Traveler

“HOW DO YOU DO IT?”

That’s the one question I always get asked from family and friends.

1. Confidence

You may be wondering why confidence is number one on this list. It is because most people are afraid to leave the comforts of their everyday routines. Complaining of boredom and the same things everyday will not do any good for a soul who is just looking to do something out of the ordinary. To many people, the money spent on travelling is money that is wasted. To people who believe otherwise, they think the places and memories are worth more than any price. The key to finding happiness in travelling is starting off small. For my fellow Michiganders, take bliss in the time spent at the lake during the summer. Soon, you too will realize that stepping out of your comfort zone is what makes you happy. Although, not everyone may feel like this but it never hurts to try. Nobody can tell you what makes you happy is a waste of money, it just takes confidence.

2. Having A Budget

Number 2 might make more sense, being a college student and such. The one thing you need being a traveler is, money. Regardless if you are on a budget or not. For a lot of people, your income may come from your job, for others it may in a different form of payment. Nonetheless, you need to make sure you have enough money for the trip you have planned. Pro tip: never book a vacation that puts you in debt. THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO BUDGET. Make a savings account dedicated to trips, put an envelope aside to put in extra cash laying around, even in the smallest ways, piggy banks for your change. Any way that helps you save your money, is a good way of doing it! I for one, use a savings account, where I put $20 or more a side from every check I receive. This helps me get to at least 1 trip a year, plus money saved for the next one. Of course you could put more or less! Find your strategy and work with it!

3. Travel Buddy(ies)

You do not actually have to follow this last step but I always prefer it. As I am a female, I have anxiety travelling alone, especially when it is somewhere far from home. I have taken many road trips to see scenery but I always find comfort in the surroundings of my friends, boyfriend, and family when it comes to travelling. Having a travel buddy may also ease your stress on the money situation. Things get a lot easier when they are split half and half (besides airplane tickets.) This is just a recommendation but for being a young traveler, I would like to enjoy it in the company and safety of people I know. And no, this will never stop you from making new friends along the way! Travel in the ways you find comfort and safety in to make sure you are having a good time.
