*I am assuming readers are located in Michigan. For those who are not, I am sorry if these destinations are not cheap from your state.
1. Traverse City, Michigan
If you enjoy Up North, Michigan as much as I do, this is the perfect cheap travel destination from your home in Michigan. You can drive with a car good on gas or fly out from a small airport into Traverse City. Visit the Mackinac Bridge and enjoy the free scenery.
2. Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
I’m sorry if you do not have a passport. If you get one over the age of 16, they do not expire for 10 years. Niagara Falls from the Canada side is said to be better. Take this upon yourself and take the drive over the border to see these huge waterfalls for yourself.
3. Chicago, Illinois
Less than a 5 hour drive from eastern Michigan, Chicago can be cheap if you let it be. Use Airbnb for a place to stay, hotels are much more expensive in the downtown area. There is not much scenery along the drive but Chicago is filled with instagram worthy backgrounds.
4. Put-In-Bay, Ohio
An island village found in Ohio. Take the ferry to island and rent a golf cart or a bike and ride around the island at your own pace. There is plenty of attractions around the island, you can even take a helicopter ride if it is in your budget.
5. Toronto, Ontario, Canada
If you have never been to Toronto, do not go in the Winter unless you enjoy the cold. Visit the capital of Ontario during the summer months to get the most out of your trip. Find a cheap apartment on Airbnb and the rest is all up to you. Enjoy their poutine and the endless amounts of bars and restaurants. Visit the CN Tower at a general admission of $40.
